San Diego Padres general manager Josh Byrnes has confirmed that Casey Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery next month. Multiple tears were discovered in Kelly’s ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow, which had been bothering him since a start on March 7th.
Kelly, a piece the Padres received in the trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to Boston, made six starts for the club last season. He posted a 6.21 ERA in 29 innings, and struggled with long ball (19.2% HR/FB ratio) after making his Major League debut in August. Kelly was shut down with elbow pain on two occasions in 2012.
The right-hander will require the standard 12-18 months to rehabilitate his elbow.
