Boston Red Sox v New York Yankees

The New York Yankees 25-man roster is almost complete after the team released former Dodgers utility man Juan Rivera on Thursday.

Rivera, who hit .305/.328/.390 in 59 at-bats this spring, was hoping to make the club as their first baseman with Mark Teixeira expected out of action for the first two months of the season. That honor will now go to former Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay, who was released from his Red Sox contract Wednesday only to sign a minor-league deal with the Yankees hours later.

The Yankees bench will now consist of outfielder Ben Francisco, catcher Francisco Cervelli, infielder Dan Johnson and outfielder Brennan Boesch barring any last minute changes before the opener Monday.

  1. Rats! I was hoping both Juan and Lyle would be on the Yankees opening day roster just for kicks.

  2. Awww… The Yankees are slightly less funny now.

    • Are they? I’d almost want Rivera over Overbay. I guess they are going with Overbay for his superior decense on 1st. Both their bats are limp dicks but I’d give the slight edge to Rivera in that department, but then again what do I know.

  3. Exactly Paquin, you don’t know
