The Boston Red Sox have placed pitcher John Lackey on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 7 with a right bicep strain. Lackey left his start Sunday against the Blue Jays after tossing 4 1/3 innings.

Lackey, who was making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in October of 2011, underwent an MRI that showed the right-hander avoided any structural damage. In his career, he has posted a 4.10 ERA, 3.90 FIP with 7.0 K/9.

The Red Sox announced they have recalled pitcher Alex Wilson from Triple-A Pawtucket, while Alfredo Aceves will take Lackey’s spot in the rotation. Wilson, who battled command issues in the past, posted a 2.95 FIP with 9.7 K/9 in Pawtucket last year.

Aceves will be making his first start since 2011 on Friday against the Rays. That year, he made four starts compiling a 3.96 FIP and 4.42 xFIP in 21 innings.
