Just a few days removed from baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline, the Oakland Athletics have traded catcher Kurt Suzuki to the Washington Nationals for minor-league catcher David Freitas.
With Cliff Lee getting all the attention the last 24 hours in regards to players placed on waivers, Suzuki either cleared or was claimed off waivers by Washington in order for the transaction to occur. On the season, the former second round pick of the A’s in the 2004 draft has a .218/.250/.286 line with one home run in 75 games. Over the past two seasons, he has playerd in 265 games for the A’s, and was known as one of the leaders on the club.
Washington, who were rumoured to be looking for catching help ever since losing Wilson Ramos to injury in May, have used four catchers in his absence. Jesus Flores, who has started most of the games since mid-May, is coming off a .190/.183/.374 line in the month of July with zero home runs.
The Athletics are expected to recall Derek Norris and make him their starting catcher with George Kottaras serving as his backup.
