You know who is awesome? Cole Hamels. He is really awesome. He is very awesome at pitching baseballs and posing for hilarious photos and getting paid copious sums of money by the Philadelphia Philles.

For all those reasons, the Philadelphia Philles need Cole Hamels to be right as rain if they hope to compete with the Nationals and the Braves for the NL East. When news trickles out that Cole Hamels experienced shoulder soreness at the end of the season and during his winter throwing program, well, people tend to freak out.

It is a tough go for relievers in this day and age. Well, a tough go in terms of coverage for non-closer relievers who sign contracts in the middle of December while the recently-elected Cy Young winner is being traded. When your name is as nondescript as proud member of the Two First Names club Mike Adams and you agree to a two-year deal worth $12 Million with the Phillies to set-up for Jonathan Papelbon, getting overlooked is to be expected.

Which is a shame, as Mike Adams deserves our full attention. Mike Adams is one of the finest relievers in baseball and he just addressed a serious area of need for the Phillies.

Not many baseball players put up careers comparable in quality to that of Michael Young. Not many ballplayers get to stick around for more than a decade, compiling hits and runs scored while leadership oozes from every pore in their Good Face. Michael Young was not a perfect player, even at his best. He posted dramatic splits between home and away and created an odd cult of personality during his time in Texas.

That said, damning a player as a creation of his ballpark might be true but when his team extends his contract in such a way as to continue to reap the benefits of that creation, it is hard to fault them – over-payment or otherwise.

After suiting up for the Texas Rangers more than any other player in the history of the franchise, the Michael Young era comes to a close today, as Young agreed to waive his no-trade clause to complete his move to the Philadelphia Phillies. Not quite the storybook ending for long-time heart and soul of the Rangers, as the only Major League club Michael Young has ever known basically just paid the Philadelphia Phillies ten million dollars to make him go away.

If you can figure out the Phillies, please step forward and explain their thinking to me. The richest starting rotation in baseball left to their own devices in a notorious bandbox as the front office makes a concerted effort to keep any and all power hitters away from the everyday lineup.

With rumors of a Michael Young trade swirling around the team, the Phillies went ahead and found themselves a new center fielder, acquiring Ben Revere from the Minnesota Twins for starter Vance Worley and prospect Trevor May, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.

Funny thing about memories, you don’t get to choose what sticks. Doesn’t matter how many good years you have, years in which you are probably the best reliever in the game, years in which you rack up saves, strikeouts and no-hitter innings. Years in which you post nearly 4 Wins Above Replacement as a reliever, striking out nearly 15 batters per nine innings, it is that one magnificent, monumental home run that stands out.

Doesn’t matter if your team went on to win the series or if you bounced back and won the World Series just four years later. Doesn’t matter at all. When you’re Brad Lidge, you’re the guy who gave up that home run to Albert Pujols. Brad Lidge let his agents and representation know tonight that he plans to retire from baseball after eleven seasons, according to Jayson Stark of ESPN.

Welp. It isn’t a PED in that will doom him to a lifetime of scorn but it looks like Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz had something in his system, as the MVP candidate now faces a 25 game suspension for violating the league’s drug policy.

With the Winter Meetings just a week away, rumours around the baseball world will once again be upon us after a small break due to American Thanksgiving.

We will all be hearing the names Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, Edwin Jackson and Kyle Lohse over the next week or so, but one player that teams have looked at as a potential wild card is reliever Ryan Madson, who Drew wrote about last week.

Madson, who wants to close out games with the team he signs with this off season, missed the entire 2012 season with an elbow injury after signing a one-year deal worth $8.5 million with the Cincinnati Reds. He underwent Tommy John surgery, and is expected to be fully recovered to start the 2013 campaign. The Phillies had been the one team rumoured to have interest in the right-hander, but it appears we won’t see a reunion anytime soon.
