Here’s an updated look at the NFL’s coaching carousel, which is spinning more quickly as the week wears on.
What’s happening: Eric Mangini has been fired.
What they’ll do next: Chase after John Fox, Jon Gruden and/or Marty Mornhinweg. Oh, and add Perry Fewell to the list. And Mike Mularkey. And Pat Shurmur. Let’s just say they haven’t narrowed the field yet.
What they should do next: Mike Holmgren should realize that he’s the best guy for the job. But it doesn’t look as though that’s going to happen. They should also consider promoting defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
What’s happening: John Fox is done.
What they’ll do next: No one seems to know, but they’ve also reportedly reached out to Perry Fewell.
What they should do next: Chase Rob Ryan or Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.
What’s happening: It’s very likely Jason Garrett will have his interim tag removed.
What they’ll do next: Officially remove the interim tag. Expect a decision in the next 24 hours.
What they should do next: Officially remove the interim tag.
What’s happening: John Elway is going to be pretty much running the show as they search for a replacement for Josh McDaniels.
What they’ll do next: Make a run at Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh. Mike Mularkey is also on their radar.
What they should do next: Chase Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher, if they become available.
What’s happening: Gary Kubiak is sticking around but defensive coordinator Frank Bush is out.
What they’ll do next: Chase after Wade Phillips to replace Bush.
What they should do next: Hire a defensive coordinator, but stay away from Wade Phillips or anyone else who will push for a 3-4 scheme.
What’s happening: Jack Del Rio is sticking around. Case closed.
What’s happening: They’re trying to decide what to do with Tony Sparano.
What they’ll do next: Make a decision this week, but I have no idea which way they’re leaning. There’s a chance they’ll try to land Harbaugh if he becomes available.
What they should do next: Fire Sparano, who is a bad coach and hasn’t gotten enough out of a talented team, especially at home. And then chase Bill Cowher.
What’s happening: Leslie Frazier has been named head coach. Case closed.
What’s happening: The Raiders announced they won’t pick up Tom Cable’s contract option, ending his three-year tenure as Oakland’s head coach after going 8-8 this season, and finishing with an overall of record 17-27. Case closed.
San Francisco 49ers
What’s happening: Owner Jed York is expected to promote Trent Baalke to the general manager role; then they can start interviewing head coaches.
What they should do next: Hire Harbaugh.
What’s happening: They’re trying to decide what to do with Jeff Fisher.
What they’ll do next: Announce that they’ve either fired or retained Fisher later this week. It’s either Fisher or Vince Young.
What they should do next: Keep Fisher and get rid of Young, since the two can’t coexist. If Fisher goes, they should either chase Fox or consider promoting defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil.
