Time to talk Falcons. And for that, we once again consult with Dave Choate from The Falcoholic.

1. I’m hearing a lot of Torrey Smith talk, but why waste a top pick on a wide receiver when you have Roddy White? This has to be a pass rusher, right?

You’re absolutely right, it has to be a pass rusher. The Falcons need a wide receiver. Don’t get me wrong. But they need to upgrade the pass rush opposite John Abraham and they need to do so immediately. Look for a guy like Justin Houston to wind up in Atlanta unless there’s a huge run on defensive ends.

2. Looks like they could use some help on the offensive line still…

There’s always room for more depth. If free agency goes forward, the Falcons could lose as many as three starting linemen. While I like young players like tackle Garrett Reynolds and guard Mike Johnson, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pick up a lineman or two to groom in case they don’t work out.

3. Any under-the-radar positions of need?

I think linebacker is very quietly a need. The Falcons have one of the better middle linebackers in the game in Curtis Lofton and quality options in Sean Weatherspoon and Stephen Nicholas, but the depth is dangerously thin. I would say the Falcons need to target a promising linebacker in the middle rounds, and they’ve scouted a couple already.

4. Who are you hoping they take at No. 27?

I’m really hoping Ryan Kerrigan falls all the way down the draft board to 27, but I doubt it. In light of the fact that the Falcons desperately need a pass rusher, I do think Houston will be there and that he’ll be a capable 4-3 defensive end at the NFL level. He’s the clear choice.
