Mike Vanderjagt gets a job

As a coach of Marco Island (Fla.) Academy’s new football program.

Now, I’m sure you’re wondering how many jerks the high school had to go through before settling on the prickly Vanderjagt as head coach, but

Vanderjagt, who owns Vandy’s 5 Brothers Restaurant on Marco Island, has worked with area youngsters in football, basketball and soccer.

“Basically, coaching at this age is like an artist’s version of a blank canvas,” Vanderjagt told the Marco Eagle newspaper. “You can kind of mold them to be a good player because they have no preconceived notions in general about sports.”

What have they done with Mike Vanderjagt!?

The 41-year-old Canadian kicker had apparently been working to return to the NFL before finally coming to grips with reality and taking this job. Good for him.

Meanwhile, Vanderjagt continues to trade places with Nate Kaeding atop the all-time field goal accuracy list. The longer a guy like Kaeding plays, the better Vanderjagt’s chances will be of regaining the crown permanently.

So things are looking up for Mr. Vanderjagt. Now, if he could just sell his Kilbride, Ont. home that’s been up for sale for about three years. You know, the one with the field goal posts in the front yard
