Philly panicking? Report says Vick likely to play Sunday
Posted by Brad Gagnon under Commentary on Sep 27, 2011
Michael Vick will have a chance to make it three injuries in as many weeks — he’s likely to play Sunday against San Francisco, at least according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Team sources tell McLane that Vick will probably suit up despite dealing with a deep bone bruise on his right (non-throwing) hand.
That they’re even considering using a badly banged-up Vick against the Niners is an indication that the Eagles are panicking a little bit. The team has lost back-to-back games after winning their opener and sits alone in last place in the NFC East. After this game against San Fran, they travel to Buffalo and Washington — not easy destinations anymore. So this could be a big one.
It’s also an indication that they’re not confident in the abilities of Mike Kafka or Vince Young. Young struggled in the preseason and has been injured for much of September. He was active for the first time in Week 3 against the Giants, but it was Kafka who was called upon when Vick went down.
Kafka struggled in his cameo appearance and Young probably isn’t 100 percent.
Division rivals Dallas, Washington and the Giants have very winnable games this week against Detroit, St. Louis and Arizona, respectively, and Andy Reid has to be thinking about the hole his team would find itself in if Kafka and/or Young were to struggle and the Eagles were to lose a game they’re supposed to win.
That’s likely why unless his hand is rotting with gangrene and on the verge of falling off at the wrist, they’ll push Vick into the lineup. And with that image in mind, you can go back to eating lunch. You’re welcome.
