Black Monday is no longer an apt term, simply because more teams are taking extra time to decide what to do with head coaches on hot seats. Let’s take a lot at what happened on Black Monday. But there’s a chance the rest of the week will be pretty black, so stay tuned.
What’s happening: Jim Caldwell’s fate has yet to be decided, but Bill and Chris Polian are out.
What they’ll do next: There’s a chance Caldwell twists in the wind until they’ve got an idea what they’re going to do with the general manager vacancy. It’s sort of a mess right now, so it could take some time. We’ll see how involved Peyton Manning and Oliver and Andrew Luck become.
What they should do next: Fire Caldwell and start anew with a power head coach and a submissive GM. I’m thinking someone like Jon Gruden and a GM you’ve never heard of before. Don’t let Manning dictate the process this late in his career.
What’s happening: They’re beginning the process of interviewing head-coaching candidates.
What they’ll do next: We’ve heard quite a few names, including Brian Schottenheimer (why?), Mike Mularkey, Bill O’Brien and Rob Chudzinski. So clearly they’re thinking offense.
What they should do next: Make a run at Jeff Fisher and stay away from Schottenheimer.
Kansas City Chiefs
What’s happening: They have to decide whether to remove Romeo Crennel’s interim tag or look elsewhere for Todd Haley’s replacement.
What they’ll do next: I have no idea. Strangely quiet out of Missouri.
What they should do next: Keep Crennel, whom the players seem to like. They have the talent to compete ASAP under him.
What’s happening: They’re beginning the process of interviewing candidates to replace Tony Sparano.
What they’ll do next: There’s a belief that Stephen Ross will chase a big name like Bill Cowher, Jeff Fisher or Brian Billick. Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has also been mentioned.
What they should do next: Hire Cowher or Fisher.
St. Louis Rams
What’s happening: They’re looking for a new GM and head coach after firing Billy Devaney and Steve Spagnuolo today.
What they’ll do next: We’ve been hearing Jeff Fisher from all of the so-called insiders, so you’d have to believe they’ll push for him. If so, he’d likely be in charge of personnel, with a soft GM serving to assist him.
What they should do next: Hire Fisher.
San Diego Chargers
What’s happening: They’re deciding what to do with Norv Turner and A.J. Smith.
What they’ll do next: I think they’ll maintain the status quo.
What they should do next: Smith and Turner continue to underachieve. They should fire both and become a major player in the chase for Fisher, Cowher or Gruden.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
What’s happening: General manager Mark Dominik is looking for a new head coach after Raheem Morris was fired today.
What they’ll do next: Start interviewing.
What they should do next: Hire Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who’s been flying under the radar for years and could revamp that terrible D. Mike Sherman would also be interesting.
