Your Wednesday evening update from the speeding carousel…
Chicago Bears
What’s happening: General manager Jerry Angelo was fired, while offensive coordinator Mike Martz left.
What they’ll do next: It’s a holding pattern for everyone else until they hire a new GM. David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune throws out Ted Sundquist, Reggie McKenzie, Eric DeCosta and Bill Polian.
What they should do next: I they think should have fired Smith and gone after a blue-chip coaching candidate. Now they’ll have to settle for a more submissive GM. I don’t think a guy like Polian would keep Smith around.
Indianapolis Colts
What’s happening: Jim Caldwell’s fate has yet to be determined as they search for a new GM.
What they’ll do next: The search is underway, and they’re apparently starting in-house.
What they should do next: Fire Caldwell and start anew with a power head coach and a submissive GM. I’m thinking someone like Jon Gruden and a GM you’ve never heard of before. Don’t let Manning dictate the process this late in his career.
Jacksonville Jaguars
What’s happening: They’re interviewing current offensive coordinators Brian Schottenheimer (why?), Mike Mularkey, Bill O’Brien, Mike McCoy and Rob Chudzinski for their vacant head-coaching job.
What they’ll do next: Hire Mularkey or Chudzinski.
What they should do next: Make a run at Jeff Fisher and stay away from Schottenheimer.
Kansas City Chiefs
What’s happening: They have to decide whether to remove Romeo Crennel’s interim tag or look elsewhere for Todd Haley’s replacement.
What they’ll do next: Interview Joe Philbin and Bill O’Brien.
What they should do next: Keep Crennel, whom the players seem to like.
Miami Dolphins
What’s happening: They’ve seemingly emerged as the frontrunners for Jeff Fisher. And if it comes down to dollars, they might get him.
What they’ll do next: Hire Fisher or settle for Brian Billick.
What they should do next: Hire Fisher. I wouldn’t have any qualms with Billick, either.
Philadelphia Eagles
What’s happening: They decided to keep Andy Reid and Howie Roseman. Case closed.
St. Louis Rams
What’s happening: They’re looking for a new GM and head coach after firing Billy Devaney and Steve Spagnuolo Monday.
What they’ll do next: Interview Fisher, but maybe not before they interview GM candidates like Eric DaCosta, Les Snead and Briane Gaine.
What they should do next: Hire Fisher and one of those fairly anonymous GMs.
San Diego Chargers
What’s happening: They decided to keep Norv Turner and A.J. Smith. Case closed.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
What’s happening: They’re interviewing potential head-coaching candidates starting with Jerry Gray.
What they’ll do next: Continue interviewing. Mike Sherman, Mike Mularkey and, of course, Fisher are other reported candidates.
What they should do next: Hire Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who’s been flying under the radar for years and could revamp that terrible D. Sherman would also be interesting.
