One final peek at the coaching/GM/coordinator carousel before the weekend begins and it’s all about what’s happening on the field.

Chicago Bears

What’s happening: They continue their search for a new general manager, which means Lovie Smith isn’t guaranteed anything. They’ve officially promoted Mike Tice to the vacant offensive coordinator spot.

What they’ll do next: Eric DeCosta is staying with the Ravens and Reggie McKenzie has been hired in Oakland, leaving Ted Sundquist and Bill Polian as the top candidates. Those two are more likely to can Smith. (Eagles director of player personnel Ryan Grigson has also emerged.)

What they should do next: Polian’s a dinosaur. I’d like to see them give a fresh name like Grigson a chance, and I’m not just saying that because he’s a former CFL guy.

Indianapolis Colts

What’s happening: Jim Caldwell’s fate has yet to be determined as they search for a new GM.

What they’ll do next: They’ve apparently been considering in-house candidates as well as Atlanta’s Les Snead, Marc Ross from the Giants, David Caldwell from the Falcons and Grigson.

What they should do next: I don’t know much about these guys. I just think they should move on from Caldwell.

Jacksonville Jaguars

What’s happening: They’ve been interviewing head-coaching candidates such as Brian Schottenheimer, Mike McCoy, Bill O’Brien, Jay Gruden, Mike Mularkey and Rob Chudzinski.

What they’ll do next: Keep interviewing. It’s quite a long list.

What they should do next: Clearly they’re not chasing a blue-chipper, so I’d say they should settle for Gruden, Mularkey or Chudzinski.

Kansas City Chiefs

What’s happening: They have to decide whether to remove Romeo Crennel’s interim tag or look elsewhere for Todd Haley’s replacement.

What they’ll do next: Interview Joe Philbin and Bill O’Brien.

What they should do next: Keep Crennel, whom the players seem to like. They’ve also reportedly requested to speak with Josh McDaniels. That would be a good move for the offense to make.

Miami Dolphins

What’s happening: They’re waiting to hear from Jeff Fisher, who is reportedly set to make a decision…next week.

What they’ll do next: Hire Fisher or settle for Brian Billick.

What they should do next: Hire Fisher. I wouldn’t have any qualms with Billick, either.

Oakland Raiders

What’s happening: They’ve hired Reggie McKenzie, who was the director of football operations in Green Bay, to take over as GM.

What they’ll do next: There’s a growing belief that Hue Jackson will be fired now.

What they should do next: Fire Jackson and let McKenzie start anew. Unfortunately, Jackson and Al Davis traded away all of his draft picks.

Philadelphia Eagles

What’s happening: They decided to keep Andy Reid and Howie Roseman. Case closed.

St. Louis Rams

What’s happening: They’re looking for a new GM and head coach after firing Billy Devaney and Steve Spagnuolo Monday.

What they’ll do next: Hire Fisher or Ray Horton (who appears to be their fallback), but maybe not before they interview GM candidates like Snead, Grigson and Briane Gaine. They might also be looking for a GM, because McDaniels is probably done in St. Loo.

What they should do next: I don’t really care what they do at GM, especially if they hire Fisher. Fisher might be smart to give his former colleague Jim Schwartz a call right about now and ask to be connected with Scott Linehan.

San Diego Chargers

What’s happening: They decided to keep Norv Turner and A.J. Smith. Case closed.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

What’s happening: They’re interviewing potential head-coaching candidates starting with Jerry Gray.

What they’ll do next: They don’t seem to be in much of a rush.

What they should do next: Hire Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who’s been flying under the radar for years and could revamp that terrible D. Mike Sherman would also be interesting.
