Week 2 composite player rankings

With week one officially in the books, we’re back to bring you a fresh set of composite player rankings. It’s all part of our quest to help you taste sweet, sweet victory in your fantasy football league. That is, unless you’re in my fantasy football league, then I hope all of your players become disgruntled and sit out as part of a massive contract dispute (I’m a very petty man).

Last week’s rankings were almost entirely based on potential, but with real games factoring into this week’s numbers, we may be able to get a more accurate read on how a player might perform this year (albeit with a very small sample size).

This week’s experts are: Michael Fabiano/Adam Rank of NFL.com and Dave Richard/Jamey Eisenberg of CBS Sports.com.

Quarterbacks

Player Fabiano Richard Rank Eisenberg Average
1. Aaron Rodgers (vs. CHI) 1 1 3 2 1.75
2. Tom Brady (vs. ARI) 3 2 2 1 2
3. Drew Brees (@CAR) 2 4 1 3 2.5
4. Matt Ryan (vs. DEN) 5 6 4 5 5
5. Cam Newton (vs. NO) 4 5 10 4 5.75
6. Robert Griffin III (@STL) 7 9 5 8 7.25
7. Peyton Manning (@ATL) 9 7 7 7 7.5
8. Tony Romo (@SEA) 6 8 8 10 8
9. Matthew Stafford (@SF) 8 3 12 11 8.5
10. Jay Cutler (@GB) 12 11 6 6 8.75
11. Eli Manning (vs. TB) 10 10 9 9 9.5
12. Philip Rivers (vs. TEN) 11 12 13 12 12
13. Andrew Luck (vs. MIN) 16 14 11 13 13.5
14. Michael Vick (vs. BAL) 13 15 15 14 14.25
15. Ben Roethlisberger (vs. NYJ) 14 21 16 16 16.75

After a tough game against the Rams in which he threw three picks (although the Lions still won), Matthew Stafford fell from third to ninth in this week’s rankings. Things won’t get any easier for the Lions QB, as Detroit travels to San Francisco this weekend to face the 49ers.

Michael Vick also suffered a mighty tumble (falling from 6th to 14th), and should probably start using his legs more if the Eagles hope to get their offense going.

Running Backs

Player Fabiano Richard Rank Eisenberg Average
1. Arian Foster (@JAC) 1 1 2 1 1.25
2. Darren McFadden (@MIA) 4 2 3 2 2.75
3. Ray Rice (@PHI) 2 3 4 3 3
4. LeSean McCoy (vs. BAL) 3 7 1 4 3.75

8. Matt Forte (@GB) 9 15 8 5 9.25
9. Stevan Ridley (vs. ARI) 15 5 14 11 11.25
10. Marshawn Lynch (vs. DAL) 18 8 17 9 13
T-11. Jamaal Charles (@BUF) 10 13 9 22 13.5

T-13. Frank Gore (vs. DET) 11 14 10 21 14

18. Trent Richardson (@CIN) 22 24 20 17 20.75
19. Steven Jackson (vs. WAS) 21 21 22 23 22
20. Darren Sproles (@CAR) 23 20 23 25 22.75

After being absent from last week’s rankings, Adrian Peterson and DeMarco Murray used big games to vault themselves into the top ten.

There was a huge split when it came to Maurice Jones-Drew, with one expert ranking him as high as eighth while another having him all the way down at 24th, killing any chance he had of making the top 15.

Wide Receivers

1. Calvin Johnson (@SF) 1 1 2 2 1.5

18. Marques Colston (@CAR) 18 13 18 24 18.25
19. Brandon Lloyd (vs. ARI) 24 9 23 19 18.75
20. Wes Welker (vs. ARI) 16 28 16 23 20.75

Fantasy owners beware: Greg Jennings may still be ranked in the top 15, but there’s a very good chance he sits out Thursday’s game against Chicago due to a nagging groin injury.

Tight Ends

Player Fabiano Richard Rank Eisenberg Average
1. Jimmy Graham (@CAR) 2 1 1 2 1.5
2. Rob Gronkowski (vs. ARI) 1 3 3 1 2
3. Antonio Gates (vs. TEN) 4 2 4 3 3.25
4. Aaron Hernandez (vs. ARI) 3 5 2 4 3.5
5. Vernon Davis (vs. DET) 5 6 5 5 5.25
6. Jermichael Finley (vs. CHI) 6 4 6 6 5.5
7. Jacob Tamme (@ATL) 7 11 7 7 8
8. Tony Gonzalez (vs. DEN) 10 12 9 10 10.25
9. Coby Fleener (vs. MIN) 12 9 10 13 11
10. Brandon Pettigrew (@SF) 11 10 12 12 11.25
11. Kyle Rudolph (@IND) 16 8 15 8 11.75
12. Fred Davis (@STL) 9 13 8 18 12
13. Jason Witten (@SEA) 8 16 11 15 12.5
14. Jared Cook (@SD) 14 7 14 19 13.5
15. Greg Olsen (vs. NO) 13 15 13 16 14.25

Without NFL.com’s Jason Smith to sabotage him, the Viking’s Kyle Rudolph makes his composite rankings debut after going unranked last week.

Otherwise, there were no changes within the top five and very few changes within the top ten.

Defense/Special Teams

Team Fabiano Richard Rank Eisenberg Average
1. Houston Texans (@JAC) 1 7 1 2 2.75
2. New England Patriots (vs. ARI) 10 1 2 1 3.5
3. Cincinnati Bengals (vs. CLE) 5 4 6 4 4.75
T-4. Oakland Raiders (@MIN) 7 9 3 5 6
T-4. Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. NYJ) 8 3 10 3 6
6. New York Jets (@PIT) 6 6 7 11 7.5
7. San Francisco 49ers (vs. DET) 4 14 8 7 8.25
8. Baltimore Ravens (@PHI) 12 5 11 6 8.5
9. Dallas Cowboys (@SEA) 9 8 12 9 9.5
10. Philadelphia Eagles (vs. BAL) 3 23 4 15 11.25

Outside of Houston and New England, none of the experts seem to agree on who has the best defense/special teams. Two of the experts had the Detroit Lions ranked within the top five, while Richard didn’t even have them on his list (Eisenberg had them at 23), thus eliminating them from this week’s top ten.

As always, come back next week for brand new set of rankings.
