Ryan Grant’s return to Green Bay highlights this week’s edition of Fantasy Insomnia. We’re also keeping an eye on San Francisco’s first-round pick AJ Jenkins, who is getting his first crack to suit up in a meaningful game. Most waiver wires have become a barren wasteland, so make sure to put all these sleepers on your watch list:

Ryan Grant (GB / RB) – owned in 1% / 3% of ESPN / Yahoo leagues – Incumbent James Starks will miss multiple weeks with a knee injury, leading to Grant signing with the Packers this week, only a year after leaving them. Running backs coach Alex Van Pelt called Grant “a pounding back” which implies he is likely to see work in short-yardage situations or around the goal-line. Grant’s competition at running back, Alex Green, is not very effective between the tackles, which helps Ryan’s cause. Grant shouldn’t have a difficult transition period, since he last played for Green Bay in 2011.

Montell Owens (JAC / RB) – owned in 6% / 19% of ESPN / Yahoo leagues – Maurice Jones-Drew and Rashad Jennings will miss this week’s contest, putting Owens in line for his first career start. MJD has been out since week 7 with a foot injury and Jennings could miss a significant portion of time due to a concussion. If you need help at running back, it’s worth picking up Owens now. He’s a two-time pro bowl selection as a special teams player, meaning he has superior athletic ability. Last week against Buffalo, he managed 29 yards on 7 carries.

A.J. Jenkins (SF / WR) – owned in 0% / 0% of ESPN / Yahoo leagues – Jenkins will dress for the first time in his pro career this Sunday. The 2012 first round pick has big-play potential and with the injuries to Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams, he could soon become the second wide receiver on San Fran’s depth chart. Randy Moss is only on the field for 20-25 plays each game and Jenkins brings more to the table than Ted Ginn or Moss. He is not worth picking up yet, but this speedster from Illinois is worth watching.

Jason Avant (PHI / WR) – owned in 1% / 2% of ESPN / Yahoo leagues – This is Avant’s second appearance on Fantasy Insomnia this year, but with the season-ending injury to DeSean Jackson, it’s worth keeping a very close eye on him. Rookie Nick Foles will need possession receivers to move the chains and Avant can fill that role admirably. He has sure hands and isn’t afraid to make catches over the middle. Last week against the Cowboys, Avant amassed 79 yards on 4 catches.

Tony Scheffler (DET/TE) – owned in 1% / 2% of ESPN / Yahoo leagues – Sean talked about Scheffler in his waiver pick-ups post and it’s worth mentioning again – Detroit has nobody else to throw the football to! If you have deficiencies at tight end, I would advise picking up the Scheff right now. The Lions are playing the Green Bay Packers in a game that is likely to be a shootout. There might be snow on the field, but that shouldn’t stop these two high-octane offences. Green Bay will try to take Calvin Johnson out of the game with double coverage and that will create seams in the defence for Scheffler, Pettigrew, Mike Thomas and …
