UPDATE: Good news, guys. X-rays revealed there’s no fracture, and doctors told Griffin that his ligaments “felt good.” Let’s not read too much into that yet as far as his Week 15 status is concerned, but good news is still better than bad news. Keep doing whatever unhealthy superstitious thing you’re doing, because it’s working.
SECOND UPDATE: And now the ‘Skins have confirmed there’s no ligament tear.
The reality of fantasy is that often reality is a meaningless afterthought. Sure, we can all still yell at television screens, dogs, and loved ones while watching an exciting football match, but oftentimes there’s a far deeper and scarier meaning to the events unfolding.
This is one of those times.
As I write this, the Ravens and Redskins are beginning overtime with the score tied at 28 apiece. It’s been a stupidly ridiculous game, but in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter with the ‘Skins driving and needing a touchdown and a two-point conversion to tie and force the extra frame, Robert Griffin III suffered a vicious-looking leg injury. After a short run Griffin lunged forward for extra yardage, but his leg whipped violently while he was tackled by Haloti Ngata. In a word, it looked awful.
Being brave and hardcore, Griffin left for one play, and then returned while limping heavily. He completed several passes to get the Redskins in Ravens territory before the injury worsened, and he had to be helped off by team trainers. He was then examined on the sideline and in the locker room. Concern quickly increased by a few defcon levels, and we know little about the severity of the injury right now. The CBS boardcast reports that Griffin suffered a right knee contusion, and for what it’s worth he’s now returned to the sideline, and he’s laughing with teammates. HAHA my leg almost snapped into like three pieces.
Kirk Cousins came in and finished off the game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter to force overtime with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon. Right now, though, fantasy thoughts are already drifting towards next week and Griffin’s health. Clearly it’ll be a deathblow to many championship hopes if one of the leading scorers in fantasy football misses time as a lot of leagues start their semi finals. Griffin had 16 fantasy points today on 246 passing yards, a passing touchdown, and 34 rushing yards.
Welcome to running quarterback ownership. Enjoy your week of game status speculation.
