UPDATE (3:10 p.m. ET): Annnd now it’s official. Gronk is active.
This is notable, which is why I’m noting it, but at the end of the Patriots-Dolphins game today we’ll likely see Rob Gronkowski as a meager footnote. Regardless, the Gronk will play today after receiving clearance from team doctors, a status that was first reported yesterday, and confirmed this morning by NFL Network’s Albert Breer.
It’ll be his first game action since breaking his forearm, an injury which led to a five-week absence. But while he’ll play, his participation will be limited, so for season finale fantasy purposes your Gronk usage should be determined by your matchup, and your level of desperation.
Are you a steep underdog clawing for every point? Insert Gronkowski as a flex play, and hope that dice roll ends in a chicken dinner. It’s extrememly difficult to determine exactly how limited his limited usage will be, and in all likelihood it’ll be influenced by both the game situation, and some out of town scoreboard watching.
The Patriots can jump into the second seed in the AFC and clinch a first-round bye, but they need to win and get some help. Specifically, either the Texans or Broncos have to lose. Since the Pats-Dolphins game starts at 4:25 p.m. ET, the outcome of the Texans-Colts game will already be known, so the extra motivation for Bill Belichick to trot Gronkowski out for a few more snaps could be in place.
You’re at the mercy of Andrew Luck to some degree here, which is never a bad place to be. Godspeed.
