The 49ers evidently want to sign every remaining defensive back of note. Also, Jim Harbaugh may have just implemented an age restriction for new players in his defensive backfield. All new entrants must be over the age of 30, and quickly declining.
San Francisco is reportedly chasing both Charles Woodson and Nnamdi Asomugha, according to NFL Network’s Akbar Gbaja-Biamila.
Despite their age and decline (Asomugha is 31, while Woodson is 36), both would serve a need, though the one Woodson would address is much more pressing. As expected, the Niners just lost Dashon Goldson when he signed with the Buccaneers, making safety a significant need.
Woodson may indeed be slowing, and there’s concern about his durability after he missed nine games this past season. But he’s still only a year removed from recording seven interceptions. There’s some value to be coaxed out of him at the right price, and both of these players would come at a decreased cost due to their veteran status.
As far as Asomugha is concerned, he was the most hated man in Philadelphia for a time this past season, a title that’s not too difficult to earn (hopefully your car is still in one piece, Nnamdi). But he would bring size to the outside, and more generally there’s hope that once he escapes the dysfunction of the Eagles defense that crumbled partly due to a lack of direction under two different coordinators, some of the old Asomugha will return.
UPDATE: Now the Texans could be jumping in on Woodson, and keeping their options open if they miss with Ed Reed.
