At least one of the expected draft trades that involve real people has happened, with the Browns acquiring Davone Bess from the Dolphins in exchange for undisclosed draft picks. Bess then agreed to a three-year contract extension.
Bess was expendable in Miami after their offseason of signing pretty much every available player during free agency. That included giving Mike Wallace all the money, retaining Brian Hartline, and also signing Brandon Gibson. Oh, and there’s also Dustin Keller at tight end, giving sophomore quarterback Ryan Tannehill many options who aren’t named Davone Bess.
Really, getting anything at all for Bess is an accomplishment. Not because he sucks (he doesn’t), but because his status as a highly expendable body in Miami is well known. Bess is primarily a slot receiver, and ideally he’ll now complement the speed of Josh Gordon and Greg Little on the outside.
