Eric Wright stays in Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v New York GiantsAnother potential domino in the Darrelle Revis sweepstakes has fallen.

The Bucs will retain CB Eric Wright after both parties agreed to restructure his deal to a one-year contract. Wright will earn $1.5 million.

Earlier today, NFL.com’s Adam Schein speculated a Revis deal was more important to Tampa Bay than the Jets. That may no longer be the case after the Bucs were able to rework Wright’s deal. Tampa signed Wright to a five-year, $37.5 million contract last spring.

The re-signing of Wright doesn’t mean a Revis trade will not be completed, but it could be an indication that both sides remain far apart on a trade for the all-pro defensive back.

Update:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense is on the verge of taking a major hit, after news cornerback Eric Wright is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance enhancing drugs policy, according to Jay Glazer. The Bucs are already missing cornerback Aqib Talib due to a four-game ban for taking Adderall, an ADD medication.

Wright has played six seasons in the NFL for the Browns, Lions, and Bucs. This season, he’s recorded 31 tackles and one interception in seven games.

The Tampa defense currently ranks 25th in the league, allowing an average of 394.7 yards per game.
