Miami Dolphins v Arizona Cardinals

UPDATE THE SECOND: The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Sean Smith to a three-year deal.

On paper — and you know, that’s where football contests are always won and lost — the Chiefs now have a secondary that could ascend to join the league’s elite defensive backfields. Or maybe that’s a bit premature, but the potential is certainly there.

After signing Smith to a three-year deal worth $18 million (a whopping $11 million of which is guaranteed), the Chiefs now have a cornerback trio consisting of the former Dolphin, Brandon Flowers, and Dunta Robinson to play alongside safety Eric Berry. Chasing Smith and stockpiling corners became a necessity for the Chiefs after the divisional rival Broncos signed Wes Welker yesterday, and he joined a group of receivers that was already sort of pretty good already with Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas.

One of their Smith or Robinson will likely slide over to primarily play in the slot, and it’ll most likely be Robinson after he was often used there this past season by the Falcons.
