The title of this post is just one of the many remarks I could make after viewing this incredible collection of pictures, courtesy of the excellent folks at Kurtenblog.
- I could comment on how well the rehabilitation of Patrick Kane‘s image is going.
- I could point out that John Madden will turn 37 before anyone wins the Stanley Cup this year.
- I could suggest that posing for pictures shirtless whilst surrounded by women and imbibing alcohol is unlikely to help the reputation of any professional athlete.
But, while all those things could be said, it’s probable that they shouldn’t be, because I doubt this is a terribly unique set of circumstances. In fact, I’d be surprised if every single team in the league didn’t have at least a couple of guys who enjoy the nightlife, maybe even a little too much.
In some cities (Montreal, for example) these things take on a life of their own. But this is what happens in a sport that features extensive travel and lots of young men with an overabundance of money. I don’t know why we expect anything else.

no shame in having a drink now and then… it doesnt really show when they are on the ice neways…
If these were oiler players then it would be a different story but its not like its costing the blackhawks any wins. And if it is then the other teams should be shaking in their skates.
Let them enjoy themselves, they are young, winning, and have pockets full of cash.
Those pictures are hilarious. Almost as funny as all the comments from Blackhawks fans claiming that they’re fake. Kurtenblog has never seen such a barrage of comments.
The only things these guys did wrong was letting someone take photographs. Obviously these ended up on Facebook or something similar and got poached. Looks like they had a good time, though. Good for them. Young guys with lots of money, had the good sense to hire a driver for the night and Kane didn’t beat him up, contributed a bit to the local economy, didn’t commit any crimes or expose themselves in public, no harm in any of it. Except maybe for Madden, because one of the commenters on Kurtenblog is pretty sure he’s married with kids. He’s gonna get in trouble, and it won’t be from the team…
Every time this comes up, I will point out that the dynastic Habs and Oilers of the 70s and 80s were rock star-level partiers. Somehow, they won Cup after Cup anyway.
Talent is talent. Fun is fun. Long as one doesn’t affect the other severely, nothing to see here.
My old boss used to run the Edmonton Country Club and partied with Oilers all the time in the ’80′s (he has a picture of himself with Wayne Gretzky at Gretzky’s wedding on his wall). His wife told me how Messier once stood on their lawn at 4am screaming at them to come and party with him and the boys the night after a playoff series win. :)
As long as they’re not breaking any laws or taking advantage of those girls, they’re not doing anything most 20-something guys would if they had the money… Of course, I’m not sure John Madden counts as a 20-something anymore….
