One of the trades made yesterday saw the New York Rangers replace recently-waived enforcer Donald Brashear with Jody Shelley, formerly of the San Jose Sharks. Going back to San Jose is a sixth round draft pick; if Shelley is re-signed by the Rangers that becomes a fifth round draft pick.
Shelley’s a capable fighter; according to hockeyfights.com he has a 4-3-3 record this year and just a few days ago he won a spectacular decision against Toronto’s Colton Orr:
Glen Sather gets the fighter to fill a role that he regards as important. As for the Sharks, they dump a player who has few skills outside of his ability to fight, and a guy who wasn’t going to be in the line-up for the playoffs in any case.
