Sens Have The Gonch

In the first “wow” move of the day, the Ottawa Senators have signed Sergei Gonchar to a 3-year deal worth a reported $5.5 million per.  There’s also a no-trade-clause attached to that, according to Bobby Mac.

I’ve gotta say I like this for Pittsburgh, it takes a huge chunk of money off the books for them which they can use to bring in another veteran d-man (like Hamhuis) and target some quality wingers for Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.  Gonchar is an upgrade for the Senators’ power play, but three years with a NTC may come back to haunt Bryan Murray.  Gonchar would be 39-years old at the conclusion of the deal, and it was becoming abundantly clear last season and in the playoffs that his defensive play had deteriorated.  Not that he was a defensive dynamo in the first place…

Many minor deals appear to be in the works, Alex Tanguay has reportedly inked a one-year $1.7 million deal to return to Calgary (bargain!?).  I’m going to sit back for an hour or so and see what else happens before the next update.  Word.

  1. Yes and no .. Lidstrom, Neidermayer, Pronger all up there in age and still can produce. If he is paired with Philips or even Carkner.. He can have someone clean up the back end if need be … Orpik is useless..
