According to a tweet from the Edmonton Oilers official account, Jordan Eberle went under the knife on Wednesday evening for an emergency appendectomy. Eberle was already out of the lineup after sustaining an ankle injury in a game versus the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

The Edmonton Oilers rookie was originally expected to miss about a week to ten days while allowing his ankle to heal. Dan Tencer stated that the appendectomy won’t change the original timeline for Eberle’s return.

In 37 games this season Eberle has nine goals and 14 assists, he is tied for third in rookie scoring with Bryan Bickell of the Chicago Blackhawks and Derek Stepan of the Rangers.

  1. Appendicitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the appendix. It is classified as a medical emergency and many cases require removal of the inflamed appendix, either by laparotomy or laparoscopy. Untreated, mortality is high, mainly because of the risk of rupture leading to infection and inflammation of the intestinal lining (peritoneum) and eventual sepsis, clinically known as peritonitis which can lead to circulatory shock.`*`’
