Here Today… Here Tomorrow?

Ottawa’s Chris Phillips was as good as traded before Bruce Garrioch reported that the former number one pick will work with Bryan Murray to re-sign with the Senators. According to reports, Phillips will have to be willing to play for less than the $3.5 million he’s making right now in the final year of his deal. A new deal for Phillips is time sensitive, as Murray will move the defenceman if they can’t agree on the dollars involved.

“We’ve indicated that there’s a strong possibility (Phillips can stay) if Chris is inclined to do so,” said Murray. “The only question I asked: If it doesn’t fit financially for him or if what we’re doing here going younger (doesn’t work), give us an answer early enough.”

Stephen Weiss Really Likes Florida

George Richards of On Frozen Pond ran an excellent interview with potential trade deadline target Stephen Weiss yesterday. Weiss made it very clear that he would like to remain with the Panthers organization:

“I just want to win. But I love it here and I don’t want to go anywhere. I’ll stay here until my career is over if they’ll let me. But it’s not up to me.

If the time comes and they call me in and tell me they want to make a change, well, I’ll have to sit down and decide what I want to do.

The good thing is I have the option and can pick and choose where I want to go. That’s the only positive thing.

Just talking about it makes me tired. I don’t like talking about this, don’t like thinking about it.”
