According to Dan Murphy of Sportsnet TV (via KuklasKorner), the Florida Panthers have traded Bryan Allen to Carolina for Sergei Samsonov. Allen becomes the third Panthers defenceman to be traded in the last three days, signaling that the club is indeed embracing their youth. The Allen trade is the seventh deal that Dale Tallon has pulled the trigger on in the month of February, and he may not be done.

Both Marty Reasoner and Stephen Weiss are still believed to be in play as far as potential trades go, and Tallon certainly hasn’t been shy about moving his veterans. The Panthers have a number of blue chip defence prospects in Keaton Ellerby and Erik Gudbranson in addition to 2009 first round pick Dimitry Kulikov, and all three figure to be leaned on heavily for 2011-12.

This deal appears to be little more than a cost cutting maneuver by Tallon and the Panthers. Samsonov will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 while Allen’s current deal had one year remaining at $3.15 million.
