There are strict rules in place in the NHL with regards to abuse of an official. Under the official rules of the game, Rule 40 and covers all things pertaining to physical abuse of an official. Players that deliberately apply force or intentionally try to injure an official are met with utmost serious discipline.

It’s too bad that players can’t enforce a similar rule on officials because as you’ll see in this clip, veteran NHL referee Dan O’Halloran knocks Canadiens forward David Desharnais to the ice with a stiff push.

O’Halloran appeared to be protecting himself from a potential collision with Desharnais, but sure seemed to have put a little more oomph into his defensive push than was perhaps neccesary. The result was good for a laugh unless, of course, you’re David Desharnais.

  1. I find very little humour in this. Referees need to disappear. They’re a useless part of sport in a day and age where everything can be witnessed by an off-ice (or field) official monitoring a TV screen and announced to the players via loudspeaker. And it’s because of evidence like this, with on-ice officials getting involved in the play, that this needs to happen sooner rather than later.

  2. Geeesssshhh, who let this guy ^ in? Even I didn’t think it was that bad.
