The story of Joel Ward is a great story

While attending university on the East Coast of Canada, a regular hobby of mine was to sneak as many tall boys as my winter jacket could hold into hockey games and watch the Acadia Axemen get trounced by the competition night in, night out. There was one player in particular whose abilities stood out from the rest every time the UPEI Panthers came to town, that player was Joel Ward.

Hockey Night in Canada ran an excellent feature on Ward’s path to the NHL before Thursday’s game, and Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun has an excellent piece on Ward today.

“I was a late-bloomer and playing [Canadian Interuniversity Sport] just gave me a chance to really understand the game better. I think a lot of players think if they go undrafted out of junior and want to pursue their education their chances of playing pro are over. I’m here to tell you that’s not the case. You just have to believe in your abilities and stay focused and don’t lose that strive to want to play pro hockey.”
