With a late season slip in the standings and a second round playoff drubbing at the hands of the Boston Bruins now behind them, the task for Paul Holmgren and the Philadelphia Flyers is to solidify their goaltending for 2011-12. There will be a few UFA options hitting the market come July 1st like Tomas Vokoun, Ilya Bryzgalov, and Jean-Sebastian Giguere, but they could be out of the Flyers’ price range. Philadelphia is flush up against the salary cap, and there’s not much relief in sight unless Holmgren elects to move one of those big contracts.

We took it upon ourselves to look around for some cheaper goaltending possibilities for the Flyers, and we actually found a few decent options.

A giant Bernie Parent hockey card

Not much got by Bernie Parent when he won back-to-back Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophies as a member of the Broad Street Bullies. Why not put the Hall of Famer back between the pipes in cardboard form?

Robert Esche and his neckbeard

Robert Esche has not played in the NHL since the 2006-07 season, but he has kept himself busy in the KHL and he has reportedly forgone shaving since landing in Russia. The addition of Esche and his ridiculous beard would lead to a lot of whistles, what with the puck getting lost all the time. The officials and War Room crew would have a devil of time ruling on goals gone to video review with all this fur in the crease, there’s a lot for the Flyers to like about this.

A massive jack-o’-lantern

The pumpkin goalie would take up a lot of net in favour of the Flyers, but we’re pretty sure Chris Pronger would blow this thing to bits before the warmup was over.

Any other suggestions are welcome.
