Sharks fall to Canucks in Game 1

Todd McLellan and the San Jose Sharks will have a different game plan for the second contest of the Western Conference Final because the one that was predicated on the Canucks being ‘rusty’ didn’t work. The Sharks kept up with the Canucks in what was a well paced game, but they would fall flat in the final frame, managing just seven shots on goal in the third.

McLellan via David Pollak of Working the Corners:

“We talked about being fresh and being mentally ready to go. I thought for 37 minutes we were able to skate. We needed to get a couple more opportunities to go in for us. Basically what happened, I thought the team that potentially was rusty, because they hadn’t played for a while, found their legs while we lost ours.”

Pollak also notes the absence of Jason Demers from Game 1 in his notebook. We’ve got some contradiction here:

I’ve heard that the Versus announcing crew indicated that, based on information from assistant coach Trent Yawney, Jason Demers was not injured.

That contradicts what I’m hearing here — that he’s day-to-day with an unspecified injury — and what McLellan said on the podium when he referred loosely to “bumps and bruises” as the cause of his decision to use Kent Huskins for the first time since Feb. 19.

Let’s hand it over to the highlights:

Latest on Derek Boogaard

Hockey Wilderness has photos, video, and some truly touching things to say from the Derek Boogaard memorial at Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota. Also, as you probably know by now, Boogaard’s family decided to donate his brain to Boston University for research. By all accounts it could be a couple of weeks before Boogaard’s cause of death is known.

How to start a controversy in Philadelphia …

… suggest Mike Richards should relinquish his captaincy. Seriously.
