Exhibit A: Matthew Barnaby made headlines last week after getting himself arrested following a ‘domestic incident’ in which he allegedly threatened his wife and caused damage to her Amherst, NY home. The former NHL player turned ESPN talking head was picked up on charges of second degree criminal contempt, harassment, second degree criminal trespass and second degree criminal mischief. Barnaby pleaded not guilty to the charges, and he will appear in court on Monday morning to learn his fate.
Additionally, Barnaby was hit with a charge of aggravated harassment via cell phone in which he allegedly hurled threats and racial slurs at a male friend of his estranged wife, according to The Buffalo News. In a Saturday statement through his spokesperson, Barnaby had the following to say about the incident in which he called an “unfortunate disagreement between us regarding a family matter”:
“The past few months have been difficult on our entire family, as my wife and I decided to separate and divorce.”
“There was never any physical violence or threat of physical violence involved. I would like to ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time, and hope that this will be resolved quickly and amicably.”
We will wait and see how this plays out in court for Barnaby, but it’s not entirely far fetched to envision Matthew Barnaby going full idiot and freaking the fuck out.
Exhibit B: According to reports, Philadelphia Flyers forward Nikolai Zherdev allegedly threatened his wife and took to bashing her car with a metal rod outside of a Russian restaurant along the Rublyovo-Uspensky highway. As Dimitry Chesnokov has pointed out at Puck Daddy, the manager of Osteria di campagnia disputed the reports of violence outside of the restaurant.
Translated reports courtesy of Chesnokov and Puck Daddy:
“The star couple had breakfast with a company of friends. Unexpectedly a fight broke out between Nikolai and his wife. The woman decided to leave the building. She went to the parking lot of the restaurant, sat in her Bentley Continental and drove to the roadway. However, in a few meters from the café the car had to stop due to a traffic jam. Then Nikolai jumped out of the doors of “Osteria,” he caught up with his spouse and tried to open the doors of the car, although they were locked. According to the witnesses, the athlete took a metal rod from the parking lot (it was not secured) and started hitting the expensive auto, shouting out threats towards his wife. The scared woman was in a hurry to escape, by making a U-turn. On the same day Evgeniya [Zherdev's wife] went to the police.”
Conflicting report via Sovietsky Sport:
“There was nothing remotely similar to what was written on the Internet took place in front of our restaurant. This is such nonsense! I specifically asked the entire personnel, including security guards, but no one saw anything. Besides, we are located on the second floor of the building, there are two beauty salons, a flower store, a bank as our neighbors…”
Note the careful use of
translation language from the manager: “in front of our restaurant”. The initial report stated that Mrs. Zherdev went to the parking lot, then drove to the roadway.
Accusations of domestic violence is serious business, but we have to be careful not to rush to judgement. We shall see how these incidents play out for Barnaby and Zherdev.
