Call it the cost of luring free agents to Columbus as Aaron Portzline reports the Blue Jackets have signed defenseman James Wisniewski to a six-year $33 million deal.

Let the Wisniewski “BJ” jokes begin.

Portzline also confirms that Wisniewski’s deal includes a no-movement clause, which gets modified after the first two seasons. Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson is really reaching on this one. Wisniewski proved to be a solid power play piece this past season, but could be asked to play a lot of tough minutes in Columbus given their thin blueline.

Howson on his newest acquisition, via Sporting News:

“James is a player we identified very early on and we are thrilled to have him as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets,” GM Scott Howson said in a team release. “He brings offensive skill and grit to our blueline, character to our dressing room and will be a key contributor to our hockey club.”

If this deal is an indication of what we can expect moving forward in free agency then there’s going to be some grossly inflated contracts handed out.
