When it comes to goalie masks, Mike Smith of the Phoenix Coyotes doesn’t skimp on detail. Smith spoke to theScore.com in the past about his own masks, as well as some of his all-time favourites. With a shot at carrying the number one duties in the desert this season, Smith opted to give his mask a true Coyote feel by having Wile E. Coyote emblazoned on his newest grill.

David Arrigo is once again the man behind the design for Smith, and you should be following him on Twitter and checking in on his website for first looks at all of his work.

Arrigo on Smith’s Wile E. Coyote mask, via DavidArrigo.com:

During this summer’s Free Agent frenzy, the Phoenix Coyotes signed my good friend Mike Smith (Smitty) to a multi-year contract. A new beginning for Mike, and a new beginning for his goalie mask designs. Gone are the days of pirates, X-Men, lightning bolts, and swordfish…

Cometh the day of desert dogs!

Mike Smith’s 2011-2012 mask features Looney Tunes star Wile E. Coyote, also known as “The Coyote”.

Smitty has always been open to experimenting with new designs. This time around I wanted to try a perspective that I hadn’t seen before. I wanted The Coyote character to be the centre point, however I wanted to continue the graphic along the sides of the mask (rather than having multipleimages overlapping).

Here’s another look at Smith’s new mask from the side:
