The New York Rangers officially announced that Ryan Callahan will be the team’s 26th team captain on Monday. Callahan, or ‘four goals’ as we like to refer to him, beat out teammates Brandon Dubinsky, Marc Staal and the summer’s prized (read: pricey) free agent acquisition Brad Richards for the honour.
Callahan avoided arbitration by re-upping with the Rangers in July to the tune of three-years and $12.825 million, making him the team’s fourth highest annual cap hit at $4.275 million.
#CaptainCally, as the Rangers are referring to him, will be flanked by Staal and Richards as alternate captains. Chris Drury served as the Rangers’ captain for the past three seasons before the club bought him out this past summer.
Four goals, one game.
