The New York Islanders will hold a press conference on Thursday to make it official, but the cat’s out of the bag as it’s been confirmed that John Tavares has agreed to a six-year $33 million contract extension.
As Rick Moldovanyi alluded to earlier today, the Isles locking up Tavares to a long-term deal effectively ends any speculation on the 20-year old becoming a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs (or any other team) for the foreseeable future. Tavares will play out the final year of his entry level contract this season, with his new deal’s $5.5 million cap hit kicking in for the 2012-13 season.
A press conference is scheduled for 1 PM ET on Thursday to announce the deal.
