I have been a Red Wings fan for as long as I can remember, and for the most part life has been good. There were some tough times (Borschevsky’s goal in ’93 still stings), but like I said I haven’t had too much to complain about.
They have finished top 5 in the conference for the last 19 seasons, won 3 cups in 6 years, and the last time they missed the playoffs I was 10 years old. What I’m basically saying is they are a model of consistency.
Even though they presently sit 2nd in the West, I have to admit that for the first time in a while they have me confused. The Red Wings have not altered wins and losses once this season. They have played 23 games and have either been on a winning or losing streak at all points. It’s been an absolute roller coaster ride, lets take a look:
5 game winning streak
Great start to the season. Shutouts by Jimmy Howard and Ty Conklin had the Wings allowing just 1.4 goals per game. They picked up 2 road wins and scored at least 3 goals in every game but one.
6 game losing streak
This one starting out rough with a 7-1 loss to the only other undefeated team at the time the Washinton Capitals. It got worse. They gave the embarrassing Bluejackets their first win of the season and scored a grand total of six goals.
4 game winning streak
The offense finally wakes up. They score 5 goals in three of these games and 3 goals in the other. Howard picks up 2 shutouts and allows just 4 goals in total.
2 game losing streak
For the second time this season they fail to get some revenge from the Sharks team that bumped them from last years playoffs. 3 goals in 2 games won’t cut it.
6 game winning streak
During this streak they are averaging 4 goals a game and Jimmy Howard’s continued strong play helped them average just 1.8 allowed per game. They beat the red hot defending champs, the Lightning and the Kings. Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk start to remember that they are Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. Combined contribution during streak: 7 goals and 9 assists.
There you have it, the roller coaster season thus far from the Wings. I shouldn’t have ate those nacho’s before getting on
