For most of the season, when you would take a look at the players sitting  top 5 in scoring you would just shake your head. It was a strange list.

Guys like Phil Kessel, Joffrey Lupul, Stephen Weiss, and Kris Versteeg were never even close to top 5 ever in their career, but suddenly it seemed like they didn’t want to go anywhere. Plus there wasn’t  “superstar” anywhere to be found. The only player in the top 5 who had ever  been close to finishing that high was Claude Giroux (he finished 13th overall last season) . You know that saying “The Cream Rises to the Top”, well it’s starting to happen. There are now  some familiar names that are climbing up the list.

Take a look at the top 5 right now. Girioux, Kessel, and Lupul are still there (Giroux actually took over he #1 spot with a 4 point game last night). Sitting in 3rd, you have the defending Art Ross Trophy winner Daniel Sedin. He is starting to heat up,  riding a 4 game goal streak putting up 8 points during that span. Right behind Daniel, you have Jonathan Toews. He has 7 points in his last 3 games and his run was sparked by a 5 point game against Anaheim on November the 25th. The best he has finished in league scoring is 12th (last season) .

Sedin and Toews are not the only two superstars making a charge up into the top 10…

6th  Steven Stamkos- 8 game point streak (11 points) . Has finsihed 5th in scoring the last 2 seasons

8th Patrick Kane- has picked up 2 points in each of his last 3 games (finished 9th two seasons ago)

9th Henrik Sedin- 11 points in his last 10 after a 3 assist game vs Colorado. Already with an Art Ross Trophy in his career

I don’t want to take anything away those players who had great starts. I personally think Giroux and Kessel will still be top 5 at seasons end. However it’s nice to see the superstars letting us know that they are in fact playing hockey this season.
