Michal Neuvirth makes a save here. He does not below.

Well, just a couple days after I said Michal Neuvirth was in prime shape to take the goaltending reins from Tomas Vokoun in Washington, I’m left feeling a little silly as I watch this highlight a few times over. The Avalanche beat the Capitals by a 2-1 score in Colorado tonight and the only redeeming quality of this goal may be that it wasn’t the game winner.

As we can see here, Avs tough guy Cody McLeod helps carry the puck over the Washington blueline and gets into a mini-scrum on the side boards just inside the line. At some point McLeod flicks the puck on net and it flutters into the goal right above Neuvirth’s glove hand.

Neuvirth looks confused as do the rest of us. At this point I’m not sure if Washington’s goaltending coach – a fellow named Dave Prior – should be fired or given a raise. You tell me.

The goal was McLeod’s first of the season.
