The exact anniversary of Gretzky’s 50 goals in 39 games was December 30th, 2011, less than a month ago.

Being that theScore sent a team to the Winter Classic around that time, we had a unique opportunity to talk to a group of Hall of Famers, including four players who were on the ice for the Great One’s 50th goal. Below, they reflect on the achievement and its standing in NHL history.

Only question: does the fact that the Flyers’ were wearing Cooperalls void the record? …Just a question, folks.

  1. Absolutely incredible. The guy is still thrilling hockey fans 13 years after retirement. Even at the age of 52 I’m still like a little kid when I see Gretzky, or watch videos of him. What a thrilling part he came to be in the lives of all Canadians. (and beyond.) His exempliary skills are something of which we can all behold, be proud of and cherish in our innermost, alltime hockey memories. Thank you Walter! (and of course all of Waynes coaches and teamates.)

  2. I was at the game with my dad when I was 8. Memories are fuzzy but I still remember the scoreboard blinking 50…50…50…50.
