When you talk about players these days who cause fans to make palm to face contact, Steve Mason ranks pretty highly. Here we have a guy who went from World Junior gold medal winning goaltender to Calder Trophy winning goaltender to “Check the last stats page on NHL.com to find his name” goaltender. He’s not exactly having an easy go.
Tonight he got some redemption (I think) with one heck of a save off of Kyle Brodziak whose swinging attempt in front of the crease went absolutely nowhere. Prepare for this to be hitting every year end highlight reel for goaltender saves as Mason plucks this puck right off of the goal line to keep the score tied and give the Blue Jackets a chance to take the lead (WHICH THEY DID! THEY WON!).

This save was just one of many gems from Mason tonight as he stopped 34 shots en route to a 3-1 Blue Jackets victory. As someone who watched Mason a fair amount in junior, I can’t help but thinking he is a change of scenery type of guy. A fresh start in a town with no knowledge of the ebb and flow his career has taken could do wonders. Now, if only there was a team which plays a defensive system that could use a goalie…
