The podcast is back! Game 1 of the Finals starts tonight, so Pizzo and I caught up to discuss:

* Whether the delay before the start of the series makes people lose interest

* The reputation change of Ilya Kovalchuk

* Martin Brodeur’s retirement (non)plans

* Ed Snider lying about Carter and Richards (in our opinion)

* Dark horse leaders from each team

* Kings are the last team standing in the Staples Center

* Pekka Rinne is an EA 13 cover finalist?

* Our predications

* And much more.

  1. Olympic Gold by a small amount ahead of Lord Stanley. Every 4 years and extremely elite company.

  2. I suspect Justin only wants the ring in order to get his dad to be quiet at family dinners. :)

    • And gold medal, at least in the current format.

      Yet, oddly, I’d put a Stanley Cup over the World Cup or Canada Cup.

  3. I would want the Stanley Cup…. It’s a nostalgia thing for me. I’ve grown up watching NHL. Olympic hockey is awesome, but the whole representing your country thing isn’t as appealing to me as winning with a team that feels like family.

  4. Gold Medal might be more difficult to get, but the argument that sold me on the Cup ring is the entire season of battling aspect. I think I’d enjoy the memories of the entire season culminating in the Cup win.

  5. Growing up watching hockey all my life in the US, I have to go with Lord Stanley’s Cup. They Olympics are great, don’t get me wrong, but chasing after the Cup year after year with what is basically your family, that’s the one I want.

  6. Anyone who wouldn’t want to win the Stanley Cup didn’t grow up playing hockey with their heart and soul. Its incredibly difficult to win (no teams like Latvia or Italy to bead) and even though it happens every year it doesn’t make it any easier to win than the Olympics. You need to play an 82 game season, finish in the top half of the league, and then survive against competition that gets harder and harder and you play every other day.

    Olympic gold is cool and all, but no one dreams of winning a gold medal when you’re playing on the lake or the street when you were 6, it was always Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

  7. I would want to be on the Stanley Cup. I heard the podcast and heard both sides, but NHL players have not played in all the Olympics. It is an honor to represent your country and I understand that is a tremendous honor. However, the Stanley Cup has your name engraved in it and if you are a 4th line player you have battled and protected someone or all of the guys on the first and second line and deserve to be recognized for that. It was a family member you protected. You play 82 games and however many in playoffs, that is a great accomplishment. Olympics, every 4 years, for 2 weeks does not compare in my mind. Your show is great and keep up the good work!!
