Some of the greatest moments captured on film in hockey have come on a camera panning across the benches of our hockey world. That trend continued after game one of the Stanley Cup final tonight as Ilya Kovalchuk and Ryan Carter shared some smelling salts. Kovalchuk is rather nonchalant about the aroma while Carter has his mind explode.

Clearly there was a difference in upbringing here.

Kovalchuk: “Hmmm, this smells pleasant. Reminds me of mother’s kitchen. Back home we used to sprinkle this on our Honey Nut Cheerios. Hey Ryan, you want a sniff?”

Carter: “WOOOOOO HOLY CRAP MAN THIS IS SOOOO EXTREME, I FEEL LIKE I JUST SHOTGUNNED A RED BULL FLYING OFF A ROCKET SHIP RIGHT INTO MOUNT EVEREST. SPORTS.”

Kovalchuk: “Haha, oh Ryan. You Minnesotans are so funny.”

These aren’t direct quotes, but I am a skilled lip reader so definitely take this at face value.

What’s your favorite NHL on-the-bench moment? I go with Rob Ray disposing of a fan in Quebec City.

  1. Great video. The rob ray incident is hilarious. The commentary is perfect, “MY GOD LOOK AT ROB RAY! Oh my goodness!

  2. Gotta be the Angry Bieksa impersonation that made Vigneault crack up. Priceless.

  3. A couple seasons ago, Drew Doughty was singing along to some rock song on the bench (as he does often) when he realizes Raitis Ivanans is looking at him with a WTF look. Drew turns to Ivanans, gets right in his face and starts singing even louder and really animatedly, then looks back to the front and continues singing normally. Cracked me up.
