UPDATE: Burke’s press conference is underway. Since he’s still on the payroll, he may keep things pretty conservative, but we shall see.

One quick update as Steve Simmons responded to the Burke comments directed to him.

Brian Burke will address the media today to discuss his dismissal as General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

We learned yesterday that Burke was “stunned” by the news, according to a report in the Toronto Star, but we will here from the man himself at noon, and will have as many quotes as possible from the presser.

In case you missed it earlier this week, here is a look back at the reaction to this massive news from editor Justin Bourne and the contributors to Backhand Shelf.

  1. Best part of the conference was when Burke burned Steve Simmons LOL

  2. Oh my god you fucking beat me to it cakemaker. That is my favourite Brian Burke quote ever now. I hate Steve Simmons and I hate the Toronto Sun,

  3. I had to rewind the part where Steve Simmons gets owned.
Burkie just came outta nowhere and said “One of the greatest things about my job being over is that I don’t ever have to talk to you again,” and I paraphrase. Burkie being Burkie one last time. That was priceless.

  4. Does anyone know how this Burke-Simmons feud came about? Simmons is a complete twerp so I can’t say I blame him for telling him off one last time.

    • Simmons wrote an article about Burke on July 1st, 2011. Basically it was questioning why he went to Afghanistan on what might be one of the most important dates throughout the year for an NHL general manager. It was a good question and Burke didn’t have a very good answer. Basically he felt he was shown up, so his ego got in the way AGAIN.

  5. “Clearly goaltending was an issue here.”

No way man. Telling the public that your minor league goalies are great, when no one believed you, and still saying they were great AFTER last season was totally smart.

“And with that the Brian Burke era is officially over. #Leafs”

Actually Rob, it was official when they fired him. Pretty sure no one was waiting for this speech.

  6. I realize that any news is big news when there are no games to report, but was this really worth 10 articles? Nobody outside Toronto gives a damn.
