Thoughts:

  • Erik Karlsson’s break out season last year with the Sens,  19 goals and 59 assists, earned him top spot on three sites. Interesting that TSN ranked him third behind Chara and Weber though with a projection of only 35 points in 46 games.
  • One name not listed is the Canadiens’ Andrei Markov, who was rated the 70th best defenseman by TSN this season with a projection of 16 points in 26 games. For the record, ESPN had him ranked 23rd, while NHL.com didn’t list him in their top 175.
  • If your looking for a steal at the position, look no further than the Penguins’ Kris Letang. His 42 points last year came in only 51 games.
  • Sleeper pick, Justin Schultz of the Oilers. Don’t forget about this guy on draft day. ESPN ranked him 30th, while Yahoo has him 20th. In 34 games with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL, Schultz scored 18 goals and recorded 30 assists in just 34 games. Justin is expected to be paired with Nick Schultz this year, with the Edmonton Sun already calling them the next Paul Coffey / Charlie Huddy combo.

Check out this move by Schultz for the Barons this year (at the :40 second mark)

Upcoming this week with the rankings, Centers, Left Wingers and Right Wingers.

  1. Love how far off ESPN is. Shows how much they know about hockey.

  2. Karlsson is not a great defenseman just because he racks up offensive numbers.
