Sabres forward Drew Stafford, who isn’t known for dropping the gloves, took exception of a hit from behind from Flyers forward Scott Hartnell on teammate Tyler Ennis. Although he clearly lost the fight, he won the battle with his teammates, who were appreciative of his efforts.
Earlier in the game, Hartnell laid a hit on Jason Pominville.
Stafford’s last fighting major came back in February of 2010, in a fight against the Blue Jackets R.J. Umberger.
I didn’t like Hartnell’s hit on Ennis but he did make an effort to go shoulder to shoulder with him even though Hartnell came in from behind Ennis.
Ennis didn’t do himself any favours by leaning forward and fishing for the puck though.
Kudos to Stafford for taking him on though, even if he lost.
According to the rules of hockey fights, Stafford won that one with a takedown.
Good thing that picking up John Scott prevented that sort of thing from happening. Oh wait, it didn’t.

Sorry. But, Stafford got pwned. No point in his trying to be “cute”.
Hartnell pounded on him, but bad. And for all the posturing (and the fact that Stafford was THE guy to “take on” Chris Neil, after the Drury KO of so many seasons ago) Drew should have avoided trying to “take one for the team”.
Had Hartnell not suffered the all-too-typical tumble, to end the bout, Drew would have been pounded to a pulp – Scotty easily got 6, 7, 8 (?) solid punches to the head; never mind the other six or so glancing blows.
It was pretty embarrassing, especially after all the “shuck and jive” nonsense that Stafford presented, leading into that nationally-televised beating.
The boy’s going to have a face like an artichoke, tomorrow.
you and scotty must be real tight! hartnell’s a scumbag and throws hits that need to be out of the game. the combination of the hit on ennis and the hit on pominville should be at least a game suspension. if pominville got hurt hartnell would be out for a while, and injuries shouldn’t be taken into account. we need to start teaching kids that from the top down these hits are dangerous and unacceptable
Sure looked like Hartnell landed four punches to the head at best, two at worst.
Let’s see. John Scott. 2:10 of ice time. 3 shifts. Something tells me that Hartnell wasn’t exactly quaking in his boots the whole game after 2 borderline hits and one pummeling of a non-fighter. Goonery doesn’t work these days, unless the goon has skill. Guys like Lucic Hartnell and Clarkston make old school dinosaur goons like Scott obsolete. Rant over. Yea hockey is back!
