Trying to find a serviceable goalie on the wire at this point in the season is definitively a tough task for owners in need of a netminder. Available goalies in your league may include the likes of Nikolai Khabibulin, Dan Ellis, Steve Mason or Jean-Sebastien Giguere, but a new name has surfaced on the wire over the last few days, and he’s a guy you might want to pick up.
Jacob Markstrom, the Panthers second round selection in 2008, has been solid once again this season playing for the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL . In 33 starts, he owns a 16-15-2 record with a 2.65 GAA and a .920 save percentage. He may not be the savior for the Panthers, although some are calling him just that, but it’s looking like he’s being given the chance to take over the the No.1 duties in Florida. Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmensen have combined to allow a league leading 3.73 goals per game. So it’s time for a change.
General manager Dale Tallon on Markstrom:
“We’ve got to start to put him into the system, see if he can play some games and get some experience. Also, we have to stem the tide. I’m not happy. It’s a critical part of the season and every game is important. We need to cut our goals-against down. He’s played great down there. It’s his third season as a pro and time to see what he can do. I’m not going to sit still and allow this to continue.”
The 6’6, 196 pound goaltender from Sweden has had a taste of the NHL before. In eight career games, he’s gone 2-5-1 with a 2.69 GAA and .919 save percentage. Markstrom will likely get the call Friday against the Penguins, giving potential owners the chance to get a sneak preview of what’s to come.
Currently he’s owned in 8 percent of Yahoo! Leagues and 2.3 percent of ESPN Leagues. Picking him up is worth the gamble.
For all those who own Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul and/or Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog, good news is on the way!
Lupul, who was dropped in Yahoo by half it’s owners after suffering a broken right forearm, skated yesterday, but is still listed as day-to-day. If you have someone to drop, it may be wise to grab Lupul off the waiver, and stash him on the IR.
Landeskog (Owned in 84 percent of Yahoo! Leagues and 49 percent of ESPN Leagues), who suffered a concussion after a huge hit by the Sharks’ Brad Stuart back on January 26th, is also back skating with the Avs, and hopes to possibly return to the lineup during the teams upcoming road trip through California. Like Lupul, owners dropped Landeskog with the fear he may be lost for a while in this shortened season.
Top 5 pickups on Yahoo:
1. Jakub Voracek (PHI)
2. Paul Martin (PIT)
3. Brayden Schenn (PHI)
4. Colin Wilson (NAS)
5. Raphael Diaz (MTL)
