  1. Yeah, I don’t buy the speeding analogy. Yeah, you can usually go 5 mph over and not get pulled over. But if you *do* get pulled over, what are you going to say? You *were* speeding, and cops don’t generally buy the “everyone else was speeding too” defense. And if you see the cop and *still* go 5 over, then you’re just an idiot. If you don’t want to get pulled over for going 5 over, don’t go 5 over. It’s pretty simple.

    Similarly, yes, players often get away with–either there’s no call, or it’s a power play instead of a penalty shot–slashes on breakaways (though this one wasn’t a slash on the hip–it was on his hands, which is why he didn’t get a shot off). But if you don’t want your goalie facing a penalty shot, don’t slash a guy on a breakaway (especially since you know the referee is going to be watching you closely). I’ve actually been rooting for the Red Wings in this series, but I don’t have much sympathy on this.
