People won’t be people when they hear this sound… On my headphones, my pregame music is shrieking and thumping. On the street, I’m weaving my bag and stick through the crowds. Late, as usual, and trying to hurry while at the same time not spearing any grandmas nor high-sticking any small children. Despite my reckless way of walking, I get a lot of friendly stares on the way to hockey, sometimes waves and thumbs-ups too, as though everyone in my neighborhood knows the backstory and wants me to stick with it. Probably I just look funny.

Theo Fleury is back in the news again, but thankfully this time it’s not because he’s attempting another NHL comeback. Instead, he’s embarking on a new career: country music.
He’ll be making his live debut Friday night on an appropriate stage, opening for Johnny Reid in the same arena in which he was a star for the Calgary Flames: the Saddledome. The capricious Fleury claims this isn’t just a one-off performance or a novelty, but a long time passion that he plans to take “as far as it’ll go.” To that end, he and his band are intending to record an album later this year.
If you’ve been paying attention, this move shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

I don’t know if any of you noticed but July 4, 2012 saw a pretty massive free agent signing that could really put a Stanley Cup contender over the top. Okay, not really, but lost in the shuffle of all the Parise/Suter madness was a signing that didn’t get a lot of coverage but warmed the darkest, frozen parts of my dead heart. If you couldn’t tell by the headline, I am of course referring to Steve Sullivan signing at 1 year, $1.85 million deal with the Phoenix Coyotes.

I’m a big fan of marketing departments because they think of really fun and different ways to promote whatever they are marketing… in theory. The New Jersey Devils have opted to enlist their braintrust for a new way of bringing fans to the rink seeing as how they are below the Florida Panthers on the NHL attendance list.
It remains to be seen whether or not this will be successful given that the video I’m about to show you has been on YouTube for… a day… and I can only assume that they are taking a run at the “so bad it’s ridiculous” market in an effort to get people out there.
Seeing as how the Devils are actually really good, let’s get this going viral so people actually go see them play. Seriously, it could. It’s really, REALLY bad. Read the rest of this entry »
