San Jose Sharks v Los Angeles Kings - Game Two

Last season during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, I put out a morning “noteworthy” column in the style of Trey Kerby’s “Things Of Note” posts on The Basketball Jones. This year I’ll be doing something similar (I think with some upgrades on my own previous attempts) using the NHL’s morning press release (“Stanley Cup of Joe,” they’re calling it), my own opinions, and some videos, .GIFs and appropriate pictures. The Bruins did it again

The Bruins won in overtime for the third time this post-season, utterly dominating the Rangers in the extra frame before Patrice Bergeron found an open Brad Marchand on a rush, who batted the puck under Lundqvist’s out-stretched pad. The NHLPA tweeted this badass picture of the celebration with Chara: Read the rest of this entry »

Only one series was in action last night in the NHL (we’re getting perilously close to that time of the year where some nights there’s none), and that was the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings Game 1. The Blackhawks beat Detroit 4-1, and it was never really all that close, despite being 1-1 in the third period for awhile. Hell, Chicago outshoot their opponent 42-21. Read the rest of this entry »

Toronto Maple Leafs v Boston Bruins - Game Seven

I’m am generally against the use of the word “epic,” but goodness me, that Bruins win last night feels like a good time to use it.

So that happened

The Bruins became the first team in the history of the NHL to overcome a three goal third period lead to win in Game 7. Hell, only one team in the history of the league has ever overcome a two-goal third period deficit (Montreal in 1979 against Boston). Read the rest of this entry »

Carry on, then

The Detroit Red Wings advanced past the Anaheim Ducks after taking them down by a score of 3-2 last night. The Wings franchise is now 14-9 all-time in Game 7s, giving them more wins in that situation than any other team.

It helped that Justin Abdelkader scored a sick shorty. Nice read, good wheels, good move: Read the rest of this entry »

Ottawa Senators v Montreal Canadiens - Game Five

Islanders/Penguins

Oh, right

The Pittsburgh Penguins pulled themselves together for Game 5, and promptly hung a 4-0 beatdown on the New York Islanders last night, not too unlike the 5-0 one they laid down in Game 1. Sidney Crosby put the icing on the cake for the Pens when they were up 2-0, doing this: Read the rest of this entry »

Playoff hockey: kinda close

Every opening-round series has had at least one overtime game. In total, 13 of the first 34 postseason games have required overtime (38.2%), with home teams winning eight of those contests (.615). Last year, a record 16 opening-round games (33.3%) went past regulation, with home clubs only winning four times (.250).

Getting leads is dangerous

On back-to-back days three of the four games were decided by the teams who didn’t score first. The Isles (down 3-2 and 4-3, won 6-4), Sens (down 2-0, won 3-2 in OT) and Sharks (down 3-2, won 4-3 in OT) were all behind at some point before rallying to win.

Speaking of comebacks: three times in playoffs, already, a team has scored a goal in the final minute of regulation to tie things up and push the contest to overtime (Cory Conacher, Justin Williams, Patrick Marleau). Read the rest of this entry »
