The man just keeps doing it. Last night Teemu Selanne scored his 22^nd goal of the season, but more importantly the 1399^th point of his career to make him the highest scoring Finnish player in NHL history (passing Jari Kurri) . This is less than a month after he passed Brenden Shanahan to move into 12^th on the all time goals list. What has always impressed me the most about Selanne isn’t the fact that he has played so long in this league, it’s that he is STILL a relevant player. He leads the Ducks in scoring and sits 26^th in the league in that department…and he is 41! Sometimes we hear numbers like 41…or 1992…and we really don’t fully grasp just how long Selanne has been a great player in this league.

So what way can we fully understand that? With pop culture references of course.

It seems like every season, every sport has one. It’s the division that looks so bad that it actually makes your stomach turn and this year’s honour belongs to the disgusting southeast.  There are so many things wrong with this division that it deserved its own post. Now I’m going to warn you, the following contains descriptions that some may find…well…disgusting. However they are true indications of how this division has made me feel this season.

If you ask some of my friends and family they will tell you that I am always a little late when it comes to fads and trends. I’m always the last guy to see that great new movie, I made my first Jeremy Lin pun right about the point when everyone got sick of them, and my brother is embarrassed to be seen with me because I have the nerve to use an Iphone that isn’t the 4S (by the way, is The Wire a good show?) . This post is no different. Yesterday I was sitting at my computer laughing at some of those “Shit people say” videos. There are the classics like Shit Girls Say and Shit Nobody Says and for my fellow Italians you need to check out Shit Nonnas Say. Then I started watching some of the hockey themed ones like Shit Leaf Fans say (this one hit home because it was basically everyone I grew up around) and Shit Canucks Fans Don’t Say was another funny one. There were not too many generic hockey ones though (at least not ones that were well done), so I thought I would throw my hat into the ring. Now I am far too busy (ok, lazy) to actually make the video, but I did come up with the following list and if you want to grab a camera and make it, be my guest. Yesterday the Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled a statue of Mario Lemieux, and when you think of guys who deserve that honour, Mario definitely falls into that category. I’m not going to go through his resume because I don’t need to, he was amazing. When pictures starting creeping around twitter of the statue, at first glance I thought it was of one of  Mario’s craziest goals when he split the D against the Leafs. Upon further review (and many corrections from my followers on twitter) , it was realized that it was  a goal against the Islanders in 1988.

I’ve said it before; I’ll say it again…this season has been weird. On the surface everything looks pretty normal; Evgeni Malkin is looking for his second Art Ross, Steven Stamkos has the most goals, and Lundqvist again is on top of the shutout list. There are a few surprises as far as teams go, but this is definitely not the first time that Vancouver and Detroit have been in the battle for the President’s Trophy.  However you have to look deeper, things are happening that we just don’t ordinarily see. A couple of these stats you may recognize from a Pizzo’s Points in the past, but their spot on this list is deserving.

Like a good stats geek does every day I was looking at the NHL stats page when something dawned on me. There are quite a few players that are near the top of a few statically categories that are presently playing on a non playoff team. I instantly felt bad for some of these players because lets face it, they are pulling THEIR weight, some are actually having career years. Yet when the postseason rolls around, the only numbers they will be discussing are handicaps on the golf course.

We are now officially in the homestretch of the 2011-12 NHL season and as always awards start to become a recurring topic of conversation. As a hockey fan, I like the fact that most of the awards this year have 3-4 legitimate candidates and no real runaway winners. However, the Jack Adams award does not fall under this category. I don’t say that because there is no clear cut front runner, I say it because by my count there are 11 coaches that could win it. That’s right 11, and before you call me crazy (although I’m sure you already have), let’s go through them in random order.
